How to Catch Big Carp

OK so we would all like to catch a big carp but what is big?. If you have never caught a 20lb carp before then if you caught one you would think it’s big. If however you have caught 30lb or even 40lb carp then you probably don’t think a 20lb carp is very big at all. The thing is does size really matter, I’m sure to the true “carper” the answer is yes it does but if you just enjoy fishing and catching then no matter how big… or small the fish is it’s still a great feeling.

At BOTLN (back of the landing net) we believe any fish caught is a treat and if you catch a double figure carp then you are doing pretty good. So, how do we catch big carp, is it the bait, the rig, or just being in the right place at the right time?. Well we think a lot of it is luck with a small part of it being skill. How many times have you gone fishing and used a certain bait or a certain rig set up and had a great session only to return to the same lake with the same method and bait only to have a blank. If it were all down to skill then you would catch every time.

Obviously one of the most popular baits for carp fishing is boilies but we at www.backoftheladningnet.com like to try other baits such as pellets, luncheon meat, and we have even caught carp on sausage, ham and even kebab meat. So it just goes to show that when carp are feeding they will take anything that is presented to them…within reason of course.

So next time you are fishing and it’s not going quite as well as you had hoped just remember what we at back of the landing net have said… use anything you can find, something different, something not everyone else is using. It might be something with a different smell or flavour or maybe the shape will make a difference. The carp get used to the round shape of a boilie and the bigger the carp the more spooky they are so if they get hooked on a boilie they might not be so keen to try one next time.

We all know that if you want to catch the real big carp then it’s a good idea to head for France for a week or two. This is great and there are some big big carp to be caught but what about catching big carp in the UK.

Fishing in France for big carp is known as being pretty easy compared to catching them in the UK, mainly because they are stocked to the brim with big carp. A 40lb carp in France is nont considered huge wheres as in the UK a 40lb carp would be an amazing catch.

So how do you go about catching these big elusive carp, well if we knew the answer to that we would be catching them all day long. Obviously the big fish are very smart and or cautious so cathing them is never going to be easy. All you can do is try different baits and rigs etc and bascially hope to get lucky.
